We had the pleasure to pass New Year’s holidays 2017 in Crete with our Italian guests from Rome, discovering the great Minoan civilization! We wandered through the most important sites of Minoan antiquity, as Knossos, Festos and Agia Triada, we enriched our knowledge by visiting the splendid archeological museum of Eraclion and discovered Hellenistic-roman Crete in Gortys archeological site. Elements of venetian and ottoman history and art of Crete emerged during our visits to Eraclion, to the Arkadi monastery and to Rethymnon, surrounded by a spectacular winter landscape! We also did not lack to dedicate a visit to popular Cretan culture, with a visit to a ceramics workshop. Our last visits were dedicated to the beautiful byzantine church of Panagia Kera in Kritsa and to Spinalonga: initially built as a venetian fortress, turned into an ottoman village, Spinalonga ended up a place of martyrdom as a leper hospital by the early twentieth century. We enjoyed world-famous Cretan cuisine and local wine along all our tour and of course during our New Year’s celebrations!
