A cultural tour in Greece is never complete without visiting the Meteora: an astonishing geological phenomenon combined with some of the most impressive byzantine art and architecture in the country! In the heart of region Thessaly, just above the small town of Kalambaka rise the Meteora rocks. On top of these rocky pillars, created some 15 million years ago, medieval hermits built their monasteries, to reach as close to God as possible. As the monasteries grew more important, rich imperial funding and donations arrived. Some of the most important byzantine masters decorated the monasteries with stunning works of art. This way, natural beauty meets with human art, creating one of the most famous landscapes of Greece.
