Thessaloniki is the second biggest city of Greece, but it is also a colourful multicultural city with a rich and interesting history: Combining roman, byzantine, ottoman and Jewish monuments Thessaloniki is the ideal city for a walking cultural tour through its unique history without missing the colourful streets and the charming everyday life around! Along the tour, we come to visit the Rotonda, Caesar Galerius’ Arch and Palace, the churches of Hagia Sophia, Acheiropoiitos and Saint Demetrius, the Roman Forum and the city bazaar.

What to Expect

Thessaloniki (Salonica) presents a various and interesting history, which reflects on its monuments, urbanistic aspect and public spaces. You can focus on history, art, architecture or everyday life.

This is a walking tour in an urban area. Traffic can be chaotic and parked cars can block the passage. During the warm season, you should carry with you a hat, sunscreen and water. Comfortable walking shoes are advised. The market area is particularly crowded, so special attention is advised to your personal belongings.

Among the suggested visits stand out:

  • The complex of the palace of Caesar Galerius: the splendid mosaics of the Rotonda and the reliefs of Galerius’ Arch, UNESCO monuments-heritage of mankind.
  • The byzantine churches of Hagia Sofia, Acheiropoiitos and St Demetrius, UNESCO monuments-heritage of mankind.
  • Aristotle square, heart of the modern city and the picturesque, oriental-style central market.

09:00 Meet in front of the Rotonda and start the visit.
09:30 Visit to Galerius’ Arch and the Palace complex.
10:00 Arrival at Hagia Sofia and visit to the church.
11:00 Departure towards the Acheiropoiitos church and visit.
12:00 Arrival at San Demetrius church.
13:00 Departure from San Demetrius. Stop around the roman forum.
13:30 – 14:00 Arrival at Aristotle square. End of tour.
